What On Earth is a Cervical Orgasm and How Can I Have One?
By Mangala Holland.
I’ll be honest – I was nearly 40 when I first had a cervical orgasm and had only heard about them a year before. And when I finally had one, I was like “wow, this is incredible! Why didn’t I know this existed? Everyone should know about this!” (I then made it my mission to teach and empower women & vulva owners, which I’ve been doing for 12 years).
What is a cervical orgasm?
A cervix orgasm happens through stimulation of your cervix, which is the neck of your womb – in other words, it’s as deep inside as you can go. You can get there by stimulating with a toy (I like glass wands but a good dildo will also do the job), cock or fingers. Trying to reach your cervix with your own fingers might require some contortion though! It’s not easy to find a position you can stay in comfortably for long (if you have a partner, see if they’re open to exploring it for you). And to experience an orgasm may well take more time (40 minutes or more).
What does it feel like?
Here’s where it gets interesting. All my clients describe it differently, as it seems to be unique to each of us. Some say they feel at one with the cosmos, and that it’s a deeply spiritual experience. Some say it feels trippy or psychedelic, and I’ve known clients who’ve had full-on visionary experiences during orgasm. Some describe it as something incredibly deep or full-body. And others have just said it’s something they can’t put words to, as it’s totally beyond description. Others have said it’s like being in a profoundly deep meditative state. Some of my clients have had orgasms where they can feel the ripple effects for days afterwards, and some have been able to stay in the orgasmic state for hours.
One thing is for sure – it definitely feels different to the kind of intense, muscular contractions that we usually have in a clitoral orgasm. This does have the potential to go on for much longer, sometimes hours. You might hear this described as peak and valley orgasms, because it can feel like energetic waves that build up, subside and then build up again. Many of my clients say “oh wow, I had this once before during sex but I had no idea what it was”. It often feels emotionally more satisfying, and it might also come with an emotional release, such as tears or laughter.
How can I get there?
You’re most likely to experience a cervical orgasm if you have trust, safety, time and patience. It does require a certain level of being able to let go and be vulnerable, so don’t push beyond your edges.
Whether you’re exploring solo or with a partner, make sure you’ve had plenty of foreplay and warm up first. Take time to explore your inner vaginal walls first, and notice what areas feel more alive and pleasurable than others. When you feel ready, gently stimulate or massage your cervix. You can either apply gentle pressure with a wand, or make small circular movements. This is a world away from being pounded by someone making jackhammer moves! Go slow and notice what you can feel. You might feel numbness, pleasure, or a sensation that just feels odd. If you notice any pain, back right off. Don’t be disheartened if it feels numb – it can take several sessions for sensation to awaken here, but over time that sensation will become more prominent and eventually become pleasurable and then orgasmic.
For many people, long, slower lovemaking works best. If you’re experimenting with a partner, being on top or being taken from behind (doggy style) are often the best positions. Many of my clients also find that being in missionary position with a cushion under their buttocks can be beneficial.
Paradoxically, the best orgasms usually happen when you take the goal off the table. Stay curious and open to exploring without putting pressure on yourself. Get curious about what an orgasmic state means to you – is it strong vaginal contractions and pulses, or something more expanded and subtle?
I truly believe all orgasms are wonderful, nourishing and empowering – and cervical orgasms can open you up to a whole new level of knowing and understanding yourself beyond anything you thought possible.
