Awaken Your Pleasure with Self-Yoni Massage
By Liz Gorga.
Many women and female-bodied people have a complicated relationship with pleasure. Pleasure tends to be our lowest priority, something we have to “earn” by doing all of our mundane tasks first, and often we sacrifice our own for someone else’s. In the rare moments when we desire pleasure, it can be difficult to access, as we have been taught to seek it outside of ourselves – through partners, validation, performance. But what if the deepest, most fulfilling pleasure was within – and what if the most rebellious, empowering action you could take was to awaken it yourself?
Self-yoni massage invites you to awaken your body’s pleasure from within. It’s about reconnecting with your yoni through presence, touch, and deep awareness – without external expectations or pressure to perform. It’s a gateway to releasing tension in your yoni, opening to more sensation, and cultivating a deeper relationship with your own pleasure. So how does it work?
What is Self-Yoni Massage?
Your yoni holds more than just sensation – it holds memories, emotions, and energy. Many people experience tension, numbness, or discomfort in their pelvic bowls due to stress, past experiences, and even societal shame around their sexuality. If you want to release discomfort, numbness, and open up to deeper sensation and pleasure, the most transformative way to do so is through slow, intentional touch and awareness. That’s what self-yoni massage is all about.
Just as you can receive a therapeutic yoni massage with a practitioner, yoni massage can be a solo practice, too. Unlike typical self-pleasure or masturbation that typically focuses on the goal of orgasm, penetration, and arousal, self-yoni massage is about exploring your body without a goal, feeling the sensations in your body deeply, shifting discomfort, and leaning into what feels good. It’s a practice of slowing down, listening to your own boundaries, and getting curious about how you can make your body feel safe, so that sensation can awaken and pleasure can expand.
Why Should I Practice Self-Yoni Massage?
There are endless benefits to self-yoni massage, especially when you create a regular practice. Just a few of these benefits include:
- Understanding what an internal ‘yes’ and ‘no’ feels like in your body
- Releasing tension and stored emotions throughout your body, including in your pelvis
- Increasing sensitivity in your vulva and vagina
- Understanding more deeply where your pleasure zones are and how you like to be touched in order to build arousal
- Shifting numbness or discomfort into more sensation and pleasure
- Cultivating a sense of connection and trust with your body
- Regulating and balancing your hormones for a healthy cycle
While self-yoni massage is an intuitive and nourishing practice that should never feel like an obligation on your to-do list, you’ll receive the greatest benefits when you devote yourself to a regular practice. Listen to your body and what is realistic for you, beginning with a monthly practice, or extending it to weekly if you have time.
How to Do a Self-Yoni Massage at Home
Before dropping in for your first practice, ensure you have a safe, comfortable space to yourself. Set aside 45 minutes to an hour so that you can truly slow down to explore your body without a goal.
Step 1: Set the Space
Lock the door for privacy without disruptions, and take some time to create an environment that feels comfortable and nourishing – perhaps lighting candles or fairy lights, playing soft, sensual music, diffusing essential oils, or taking a hot bath beforehand. You’ll want to ensure you have some bodysafe oil within reach – make sure this can be used on your yoni as well, opting for coconut oil, almond oil, or an oil-based lubricant.
Step 2: Connect with Your Breath
Begin by placing your hands over your heart and your lower belly and take slow, deep breaths. Feel the warmth of your own touch and set an intention for your practice – whether it’s to awaken pleasure, release tension, or simply to connect and listen to your body.
Step 3: Sensually Massage Your Body
Warm up the entire body before you touch your yoni. Allow your hands to move intuitively, perhaps using oil so you can glide over your skin. Bring extra attention to your jaw and inner thighs to release tension, and to your breasts and lower belly, which both act as energetic activation centers that are connected to your yoni. Allow yourself to melt into a state of relaxation.
Step 4: Check In With Your Boundaries
Rest your hands on your lower belly or cup your yoni and begin to breathe deeply while listening to your boundaries. Listen for your internal ‘yes’ or internal ‘no’ to receive touch to your vulva. If your body is telling you ‘no,’ it can be just as powerful to listen and honour a ‘no’ as it is to continue the practice. If you hear a ‘yes’ to continuing, you can move on.
Step 5: Start with External Touch
Begin to massage your vulva (external anatomy) while breathing deeply and moving slowly. It can be helpful to isolate areas while tuning into the sensations you experience in each area. If you feel sensation or pleasure, lean into it. If you experience numbness or discomfort, it can be helpful to massage, breathe deeply, and release audible sound on your exhales. Explore with curiosity and without expectation, just noticing what is present without the need to “fix” anything.
Step 6: Explore Internal Massage (If It Feels Right)
Before moving to your vagina (internal anatomy), check in with your boundaries again, taking as much time as you need to feel a full bodied ‘yes’ before inserting your lubricated fingers inside your vagina. If you feel that ‘yes,’ take time to explore different areas internally with a slow, gentle, conscious touch. Explore different pressures, notice if you prefer stillness or movement, and pay attention to your sensations, breathing into them without judgment.
Step 7: Follow Sensation, Not Expectation
There’s no right or wrong way for a self-yoni massage to look. Some days, it may feel deeply pleasurable, while other days, you may have emotions or discomfort arise. Allow yourself to meet whatever comes up with love and compassion.
Step 8: Close with Gratitude
When you feel complete, gently remove your fingers and cup your hands over your yoni. Take a moment to integrate, thanking your body for the sensations you felt, for the pleasure you discovered, for communicating with you through discomfort or numbness, for what it was able to shift, and for the time and space to simply explore and listen.
Reclaim Your Pleasure
Self-yoni massage is a gateway to deeper self-knowing, healing, and embodied pleasure. It’s an act of radical self-love and reclamation of your body, a way to remember that pleasure is your birthright. By creating space for intentional, slow touch, you begin to rewrite your relationship to your body. You shift from seeking pleasure outside of yourself to discovering it within.
Are you ready to awaken deeper pleasure? Your yoni is waiting.
